I just got back from the WGHT show in Oaks, PA, and what a tremendous waste of time!
First, I left my house at around 8am, thinking I would be able to take my time and get there well before the 10am opening. Plenty of time to score a free Bachmann O gauge Plasticville stucture for my father-in-law… or so I thought.
The turn out for the show was tremendous — I would say the number of people rivaled the national show in Philadelphia a couple of years ago. However, the venue clearly was not expecting (nor could it really handle) that many people.
All of the highways around Oaks were backed up for about 2 miles by time I got there around 9:30am — note that there was a 10 mile backup when I left around 12:30pm. After an hour wait to move the two miles, I turned into the actual town of Oaks. It’s a small PA town in which the model railroaders were essentially shutting down due to the massive traffic jam. Another upcoming train show for those of you in the Philadelphia area. This time, it’s the World’s Greatest Hobby on Tour show being held at the brand new Greater Philadelphia Expo Center at Oaks on January 3rd and January 4th, 2009.
It promises to be an excellent show with both retailers and manufacturers, including booths by Atlas, Kato, Walthers, Lionel, Woodland Scenics. All together, there is scheduled to be 200 booths in the 50,000 square foot complex and seminars and workshops are being offered. Walt Disney will even be in attendence with their Railroad Story Exhibit and Presentation.
One special feature is that the first 1,000 attendees each day will receive a free Bachmann Plasticville structure.

Just a quick note for those of you in the Pennsylvania area. In case you didn’t know, there is a Greenberg Train Show this weekend (Saturday, December 13, 2008 and Sunday, December 14, 2008) at the Valley Forge Convension Center.
